Woodbridge girls drop first game of season to Caravel Academy

BEAR — It was anyone’s game through the first eight minutes, but by halftime Caravel Academy had taken full control. The Buccaneers used an 11-0 run to begin the second quarter to jump ahead by 16 points on the way to a 71-38 girls’ basketball victory over previously unbeaten Woodbridge High Tuesday night. “When you come up here and play against a good team, you have to be prepared,” said Woodbridge second-year coach Isaiah Robinson. “Every time they caught us out of position, they were capita

Smyrna boys snap Senators' eight-game winning streak

DOVER — The last thing Elisha Gregory wanted was a repeat of two weeks ago. After his team suffered a 24-point loss to rival Dover High at home on Jan. 11, the Smyrna High senior standout made sure his Eagles turned the tables on the road this time around. Gregory dropped a game-high 27 points to lead the Eagles to a 62-60 victory over the Senators Tuesday night. He scored 13 of those points in the third quarter alone to break the game open in the second half. “He did exactly what I needed hi

Dover boys dominate second half in 76-52 win over Eagles

SMYRNA — Jaheim Harrell couldn’t miss from behind the three-point line. The Dover High guard drained seven three-pointers, four in the first half alone, Tuesday night to lead his Senators to a convincing 76-52 road win over division rival Smyrna High. “My teammates encouraged me to keep shooting the ball,” Harrell said. “So, they kept feeding me the ball and I kept doing what I was supposed to do.” “I thought he shot the ball well tonight,” said Dover coach Stephen Wilson. “He’s the leader of

Laurel Bulldogs cruise to 1A title with win over St. Elizabeth

NEWARK — Javier White wasn’t sure he’d even get another chance to carry the ball before the halftime break. But when his Laurel High teammate Omori’Yon Cannon picked off a pass with 28 seconds remaining, the senior running back cashed in on the very next play for a 28-yard score to put his Bulldogs ahead at the break. “I didn’t think we’d get the ball back,” White said. “It was nice … we got the interception, changed the momentum and I just went out there and scored.” From there, the top-seed

Caravel ends Delmar’s tourney run in Division II soccer semifinals 5-1

BEAR — Everything was going well for Delmar High for the entire first half and for the first nine or so minutes of the second. The No. 11-seeded Wildcats led 1-0 and created a few scoring opportunities to potentially extend that lead. But in the span of just two minutes early in second half, Caravel Academy put both the game-tying and the go-ahead goal in the back of the net to swing the momentum on the way to a 5-1 DIAA Division II boys’ soccer semifinals victory Wednesday night. “We struggl

Caesar Rodney defeats Sussex Central 4-1 to earn spot in D-I soccer finals

CAMDEN — When he saw the ball approaching him, he couldn’t believe it. But when the ball fell at his feet, Trevor Sullivan made sure to take advantage of the opportunity and set his teammate up in perfect position. The Caesar Rodney High freshman ended up being credited with the assist on the first half corner kick goal that tied the game up 1-1, with sophomore Derek Hawkins deflecting the ball into the net for the score. Sullivan later netted the go-ahead goal in the 48th minute on the way t

IR’s Crandell wins individual D-II girls title: Cape boys place 2nd at DIAA cross country championships

WILMINGTON — If there’s one thing Brynn Crandell hates, it’s running in the rain. But she wasn’t about to let a little bit of bad weather keep her from doing what she does best. The Indian River High sophomore ran through the cold, wet and windy conditions Saturday afternoon to capture the individual state title in the Division II race at the DIAA cross country state championships at Brandywine Creek State Park. “I hate running in the rain,” Crandell said. “That is something everyone knows ab

Top-seeded Riders shut out Vikings 5-0 in tourney quarterfinals

CAMDEN — Daniel Tebar Gomez typically kicks with his left foot, but if necessary he has no problem scoring with his right. That’s what the Caesar Rodney High senior had to do early in the second half Wednesday night. Tebar Gomez netted a game-high two goals as the top-seeded Riders shut out division foe Cape Henlopen High 5-0 in the quarterfinal round of the DIAA Division I boys’ soccer state tournament. “I see three guys at the 18, I’m a lefty and they’re not going to let me shoot with the l

Padua ends Senators’ volleyball tourney run

WILMINGTON — Just by stepping onto the court Tuesday night, the Dover High volleyball team was making history. Though the program’s first appearance in the quarterfinal round of the DIAA state tournament ended with a 3-0 loss against second-seeded Padua Academy at St. Mark’s High, Dover coach Eric Riehl is excited about the program’s direction. Riehl was especially excited after seeing the fight the girls showed in the third set, with their season slowly coming to a close. “I am definitely so

Padua sweeps Eagles in volleyball state tourney 2nd round

WILMINGTON — Getting past the second round has been a longstanding goal of the Smyrna High volleyball program. After earning the team’s first state tournament win in over four years just a couple days ago, the 15th-seeded Eagles had the opportunity to make that happen Friday night. Though the team ultimately fell short of that goal following a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Padua Academy in the DIAA tournament’s second round, coach Daniel Wandless is proud of his team and believes achieving that second rou

Riders top Vikings 3-1 in volleyball tourney

CAMDEN — Sarah Husemann couldn’t have asked for a better start from her girls in the third set. In the blink of an eye, Caesar Rodney High had already put together a 12-0 advantage and led by as many as 17 points in the team’s pivotal third set victory. The 12th-seeded Riders rode that momentum to a 3-1 victory over No. 21 Cape Henlopen High in Thursday night’s DIAA volleyball state tournament first round. “One of my favorite things about this team is that they are true competitors and they j

Dover clinches first North volleyball title since 2006 with 3-2 win over Smyrna

DOVER — It took all five sets to decide a winner Thursday night, but when it was over Dover High made history. After trailing two sets to one, the Senators rallied to win consecutive sets for a 3-2 victory over division rival Smyrna High. The win clinches Dover’s first Henlopen North volleyball title since 2006. The 25-23, 24-26, 26-28, 25-14, 15-9 victory also gives the Senators the program’s second win over the Eagles in the last three meetings, dating back to another 3-2 win in 2019. “I w

Jaguars use fast start to snap Dover’s win streak

MIDDLETOWN — It can be difficult to play catch up for 48 minutes. Before the offense was even able to take the field, Dover High already trailed by a touchdown. And less than five minutes into the game, Appoquinimink High had built up a two-score lead on the way to a hard-fought 34-28 victory at Jaguar Stadium Friday night. The Class 3A loss snaps Dover’s four-game win streak while Appoquinimink picks up their second win of the season to improve to 2-3. Dover will now prepare to host Class 3

Smyrna remains unbeaten with 3-0 volleyball sweep of Cape

SMYRNA — Sometimes the final score doesn’t tell the whole story. That was certainly the case in Smyrna High’s 3-0 volleyball sweep of rival Cape Henlopen High in Thursday night’s Henlopen Conference Northern Division showdown. “It was a really great match tonight,” said Smyrna senior Gianna Romano. “I think Cape Henlopen has always been one of our toughest games. We were battling for every point in each set ... I think it shows how both sides really care about this game and really wanted to wi

Riders drop to 0-3 with 6-0 loss to Appo

CAMDEN — It’s not like Caesar Rodney High didn’t have chances to put the ball in the end zone. The Riders drove down the field and had possession inside the 20-yard line twice in the first half, but just couldn’t quite finish the job. The defense and special teams units did their job, picking off a pair of passes while allowing just one touchdown but it wasn’t enough as the Riders fell 6-0 to Appoquinimink High Friday night at Rider Stadium in a Class 3A clash. “That was probably our best hal

Wilmington University men’s soccer picking up where they left off in 2019

Prior to the program’s season-opening win over Bentley on Sept. 2, it had been a while since the Wilmington University men’s soccer team had taken the field. That doesn’t mean the rest of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference has forgotten what the Wildcats are capable of doing, of course. On Aug. 23, the CACC released its official 2021 Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll. The Wildcats earned the No. 2 ranking on the list with 121 points, just four points behind first-place Post Universit
